What you should know before trying contact lenses?

Better vision is one of the important factors everybody wants to maintain. Some issues on vision have enlarged hence bringing up the use of contact lenses to amplify better vision for those facing this challenge. Contact lenses are thin lenses placed directly on the surface of the eye; they are mainly worn to enhance better vision or even for therapeutic reasons.

Before trying out these lenses, you should understand the different types of contact lenses. Contact lenses mainly consist of three types which include:

  • Soft lenses
This soft contact lenses is also known as hydrogel or silicone hydrogel lenses. They are mostly known to be very thin, moist, and made of water-absorbing materials that bring forth a gel-like feel. It also contains water which carries about 50% of the total weight of the lenses, making them more comfortable and easier to wear.
This type of lens is the most used for its qualities. They mainly allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea to enable vision. The main difference between hydrogel and silicone hydrogel is that silicone hydrogel lenses transmit more oxygen to the eye’s surface than conventional hydrogel lenses.
  • Rigid gas permeable lenses
This type of lens is a rigid contact lens made of oxygen permeable polymers. This enables it to give a better vision with a short adaptation period. This lens must be removed for cleaning and disinfection at night hence coming up with tints for handling purposes and bifocals.
  • Hybrid lenses
Compared to soft lenses, hybrid lenses offer a better and more stable vision. The center of the hybrid lens consists of rigid material, enabling it to not change the shape one puts on the ocular surface and also helping neutralize corneal irregularities. This type of lens combines both soft lenses and rigid gas permeable lenses. You also need to consider the following before trying contact lenses:
  • The doctor’s recommendation of the contact lens
You should only consider using the specific type of lens the doctor has advised you on. You should not look at any point substitute lenses unless the doctor advises you to do so to prevent further damage.
